Como nace la idea de verte como diseñador? / How the idea of being a fashion designer did born?
La verdad no fue algo que yo quisiera desde siempre. Cuando era pequeño, pensaba en ser veterinario, dentista, bombero y ese tipo de cosas. La moda no era una de mis prioridades. La ropa era algo que me gustaba y a veces, hasta hacía berrinches porque no me agradaba usar cosas con las que no me sentía cómodo. La moda fue algo que estaba ahí, pero no le presté tanto interés hasta mi adolescencia, cuando no podía pagar por algunas cosas que me gustaban, así que yo mismo alteraba ropa de segunda mano. Con el tiempo, me fui dando cuenta que diseñar era algo que me apasionaba y me hacía sentir feliz.
The truth it wasn't something I wanted. When I was little, I thought about becoming a veterinarian, dentist, firefighter and that sort of thing. Fashion was not one of my priorities. Clothing was something I liked and sometimes even had tantrums because I didn't like to use things that I wasn't comfortable with. Fashion was something that was there, but I didn't pay much interest til my adolescence, when I couldn't pay for some things I liked, so I altered it second-hand clothes. Over time, I realized that design was something that fascinated me and made me feel happy.
Como definirías tus antiguas colecciones? / How would you define your past collections?
Personalmente las definiría como una aprendizaje. Cada una de ellas me enseño varias cosas y han sido una pequeña meta cumplida en este camino de convertirme un diseñador. Estéticamente, podría decir que son sencillas, atemporales y con cierto toque de inocencia.
Personally I would define as learning. Each of them taught me several things and have been a small goal achieved in this way to becoming a designer. Aesthetically, I would say they are simple, timeless and with a touch of innocence.
Como se diferencia tu nueva colección de las demás, y porque le has dado ese nombre? / How your new collection differs from the others, and why you have given that name to it?
Esta colección es diferente a las demás porque me inclino por el uso de ciertas formas y siluetas que no he usado en trabajos anteriores, se incluyen nuevos accesorios y es el trabajo más grande que he hecho hasta ahora. Decidí darle este nombre, porque cuando empecé a trabajar en la idea de una colección me encontraba bastante triste y buscaba formas de sentirme un poco más animado. Por una extraña razón, me topé con el libro de Alicia en el País de las maravillas y me pareció muy interesante la idea de conectar el concepto de buscar una salida a tus problemas con Wonderland. Para mi, todas esas cosas que buscamos para calmarnos, se convierten en un pequeño refugio o lugar mental donde todo puede ser posible. Además de esto, muchos de los textos del libro me recordaron a situaciones personales por las que estaba atravesando. Por todo esto, decidí que "wonderland" era el nombre perfecto para este trabajo.
This collection is different from the others because I'm using certain forms and silhouettes that I haven't used in my previous work, including new accessories and this is the biggest work I've done so far. I decided to give it this name, because when I started working on the idea of this collection I was quite sad and looking for ways to feel a bit more lively. For some reason, I came across with the book Alice in Wonderland and I found very interesting the idea of connecting the concept of finding a solution to your problems with Wonderland. For me, all those things we seek to calm, turn into a small shelter or mental place where everything is possible. Besides, many of the texts of the book reminded me personal situations I was going through. For all this, I decided that "wonderland" was the perfect name for this work.
Que pensas de la moda guatemalteca? / What do you think of fashion in Guatemala?
La moda guatemalteca ha dado muestras que está llena de creatividad y una visión propia. Acá en nuestro país hay gente con mucho talento y ganas de marcar la diferencia. A pesar de las adversidades, los diseñadores hemos demostrado que tenemos voz propia y queremos que la gente vea nuestro trabajo, lo compre y lo lleve en la calle. Mi sueño es que en 10 años podamos ver tiendas de diseñadores nacionales en centros comerciales. Pero para que estos se logre, hay que dejar de lado las peleas, chismes y otras situaciones y enfocarnos en trabajar para sacar esta industria adelante.
Guatemalan fashion has shown that it is full of creativity and it's own vision. Here in our country there are people with a lot of talent and desire to make a difference. Despite the difficulties, the designers have shown that we have a voice and we want people to see our work, to buy it and to wear it in the street. My dream is that in 10 years we can see national designer stores in shopping malls. But for this to be achieved, we must put aside the fights, gossip and other situations and focus on our work to take this industry forward.
Te gusta mas diseñar para mujeres o para hombres? / What do you like most, design for women or for men?
Creo que no podría decidir entre las dos cosas, pero el proceso de creación de las prendas es diferente. Cuando diseño para mujer pienso en lo que me gustaría ver en una mujer y de cómo resaltar la belleza natural de quien lleve mi prenda. En el momento de crear ropa de hombre, pienso en las cosas que me gustaría llevar a mi. Es una forma un poco rara de pensar en qué hacer, pero ha dado resultado y seguiré trabajando de esta manera.
I could not decide between the that, because the creation process is different in the garments. When I design for women I think of what I would see in a woman and how to highlight the natural beauty when they carry my garment. And creating menswear, I think of the things I like to wear for myself. It is a slightly odd to think of what to do, but t have worked and I´ll continue to work this way.
Cuando pensas en diseñar que buscas para inspirarte? / When you think about design where do you look for inspiration?
Realmente no busco inspiración, cuando empiezo a trabajar las colecciones las ideas vienen de las situaciones por las que estoy pasando o veo alrededor. Luego de tener esta algo en mente, trato de buscar una forma de abordar lo que quiero de forma diferente y sin caer en algo que resulte demasiado obvio. Además de esto, la música es parte importante del proceso creativo, ya que lo que escucho es parte de pasa por mi cabeza durante el proceso creativo. Cuando presento una colección, quiero que esta sea como un cuento. No me siento cómodo con la idea de presentar solo algo "bonito", quiero prendas que tengan vida propia sin necesidad de caer en excesos.
I really don't look for inspiration, when I start working my collections ideas come from the situations I'm going through or see around. After having this thing in mind, I try to find a way to address what I want in a different way without falling into something that is too obvious. Besides this, music is an important part of the creative process, what I hear is part of my mind during the creative process. When I present a collection, I want it to be like a fairy. I'm not comfortable with the idea of presenting just something "nice", my garments have its own life without falling into excesses.
En una palabra como definirías tu estilo al diseñar? / In one word how can you define your style designing?
Escoger una palabra es difícil, pero podría definirlo como minimalista-divertido-peculiar-sencillo-llamativo-retro-dark. Yo sé que esta palabra no existe, pero no puedo elegir.
Choose one word is difficult, but it could be defined as minimalist-funny-unusual-simple-striking-retro-dark. I know that this word doesn't exist, but I can't choose.
Me gusta ser accesible con la gente y que todos se enteren del proceso de trabajo de las prendas a la colección. Por eso, pueden seguirme a través de mi página de Facebook o en Twitter . A veces, me es muy difícil publicar seguido, pero trato de hacerlo cada vez que puedo.
